Concert Details: Music Down in My Soul - May 10 & 11
A Mother’s Day Weekend Celebration of Home, Heart & Harmony

This spring, the South Shore Chorale invites you to a concert that echoes the universal longing for connection, belonging, and the places—and people—we call home. Anchored in themes of community, heritage, and the unbreakable ties that bind us, Music Down in My Soul weaves together timeless spirituals, jubilant classics, and contemporary works that resonate deeply with our coastal roots.

Highlights of the Program:

Two East Coast Gems: Experience world-premiere performances of Sing You Home and When It Comes My Turn, arranged by our own Peter Robson. These heartfelt adaptations celebrate the work of Maritime artists Maureen Ennis and David Myles, blending folk sincerity with choral grandeur.
Sehati (One Heart): Tracy Wong’s radiant anthem of unity, sung in Malay and English, embodies the joy of standing “still here together.”
The Love of the Sea: Donna Rhodenizer’s hauntingly beautiful ode to the Atlantic—a love letter to our region’s soul.
North: A choral adaptation of Sleeping At Last’s reflective ballad, painting home as “the dirt in which our roots may grow.”
Spiritual Soul: From the defiant hope of Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child to the exultant Music Down in My Soul, these pieces remind us that music is both refuge and revelation.

Special Guests: Welcoming The Blockhouse Chorus—a vibrant new ensemble spanning generations, from spirited 7-year-olds to nurturing adults. Together, our combined voices will uplift, unite, and carry you from the swing of Sing, Sing, Sing! to the introspective shores of Parlez-moi de la mer.

The Blockhouse Chorus

The Blockhouse Chorus is a 16-member community choir comprising children ages 7 to 13 and a few adults. Members are homeschoolers and their parents and Waldorf School students and alumni. They are conducted by Ruth Lillington and accompanied on piano by Phyllis Nickel. 2024/2025 is their first season together and they have participated in the Lunenburg County Music Festival as well as fundraising fairs at the Waldorf school. The Blockhouse Chorus is pleased to have been invited to share the stage with the South Shore Community Choir for their spring concert.

Artistic Director

Ruth Lillington is a voice and piano teacher on the South Shore with a busy home studio in Bridgewater. Since moving to the area from Ontario six years ago, she has been involved as a chorister and soloist with Dalhousie Collegium Cantorum, as vocal director for South Shore Summer Theatre, as a singer and assistant music director for the South Shore Players, and has sung with the South Shore Chorale and Maritime Concert Opera. After volunteering as choir director for the South Shore Waldorf School for several years, she opened up the group this year to include homeschoolers and their parents as well as alumni from the school.
